A Practical Guide to Selecting the Right Masterbatch

Selecting the right masterbatch is critical to achieving consistent colour, performance, and regulatory compliance in finished plastic products. The decision involves several key factors.

First, carrier compatibility: the masterbatch carrier resin must be compatible with your base polymer to ensure uniform dispersion. A PP-based masterbatch in a PE application may work, but the reverse can cause issues.

Second, let-down ratio: most colour masterbatches are dosed at 1–5%, while additive masterbatches may require 1–10%. Higher pigment loading allows lower dosing but can affect mechanical properties if over-dosed.

Third, regulatory compliance: for food-contact, medical, or toy applications, ensure pigments and additives carry the necessary certifications (FDA, EFSA, USP Class VI).
